Your guide to buying online for the first time
Some people love online shopping while others have never tried it. Those who have never purchased online usually haven’t done so due to the fear of what could go wrong. There are many horror stories about people whose credit card details have been stolen or who have paid for items that never arrived.
One thing to remember about shopping on the internet is that common sense applies here too just as much as it does when buying in real life. For many people sticking to the big online shops like amazon etc is assurance enough that they are safe. However what if you want buy something from a smaller store, one you have never heard of or purchased from before? I have decided to list a few points to help anyone shopping somewhere new avoid the risks:
- Make sure the site has some sort of encryption so when your credit card number is sent it can’t be intercepted by someone else. This is usually denoted by a small padlock icon in your browser.
- Check out some reviews of the shop from other community sites on the web like Ciao or facebook. Even if its a small site someone somewhere will have used it and people love to talk about new shops that they use.
- Check the fine print for costs you may not be aware of. Everything from extra delivery charges for your country to import tax can really add on to the final price of your purchase.
- Some sites have a strict returns policy, so even if you are unhappy with the product you can only return it if it is faulty.
So there you have it, a few tips from me to help you with your next purchase on the internet weather it is your 1st or 101st time buying online!
