Designer Handbags for Hobby or Profession?
This is always the sixty-four thousand-dollar question that people ask themselves when it comes to transitioning from a hobby to a business. You my be really good at making designer handbags from scratch and giving them to your friends and family. But what if you could “make a business” of it? You are not alone in this quest. I am using designer handbags as an example because it takes time, money, and creativity to master the craft of making them. But when you bring in the extra element of selling them, then you have entered into another arena altogether. Take someone who loves to cook, for example. They may be great at serving a meal to four of five of their closest friends, but what if they have to cook for 300 people in a restaurant who all have their own time demands and also have various tastes. Not to mention that you need to keep track of your food inventories like perishable vs. non-perishable so you don’t over-buy, under-buy, or simply waste food and money.
I am not in any way trying to discourage someone who is excellent at making designer handbags to not follow their dream of making it a business. However, it is important to know that there are risks involved. And more often than not, those risks can end up becoming disasters and ultimately discouraging the person from even thinking about making another handbag. And that is not anyone’s goal.
So if you are thinking about turning your hobby into a business, make sure that you remember this piece of advice, “What got you there in the first place is going to keep you there in the long run.” In other words, don’t take on more than you can handle when you are just starting out. For example, don’t spend a lot of money advertising in the beginning. If you have been doing this as a hobby for a short time or a long time, you likely have a network of friends who can give you some “word of mouth” publicity. And believe it or not, this type of publicity is the best advertising you can ever get. So go for it! Just remember to be patient and don’t forgot that you started doing this because you enjoy it. That is why you are good at it and that is why you will ultimately make money at it.
