A History of the Leather Messenger Bag

The first people to wear a leather messenger bag were mail carriers. Even today you can still see many of them with the carrying strap running over the chest and opposite arm, while the pouch hangs down along the side of the body. This device was designed in such a manner to keep hands in use for riding a bike or for sorting pieces of mail. This is how the pouch got its name.

Later, the device led to the development of other carrying cases and pouches for those who needed something to carry documents to the office or to take new products along on sales trips. The specific shape or form of the device is typically configured in a rectangle, used sideways or in an up and down position.

This item is most often constructed of a nylon material, with buckles and snaps for hardware. Straps for carrying the device are usually made of a nylon weave, which makes them strong enough to hold hundreds of separate pieces. Newer versions are often made of leather, with very stylish straps and pieces of hardware. This is a better option for those who attend board meetings and see clients in various business locations. Well known brands of women’s purses have also been fashioned after this device, due to overwhelming popularity of such items and their multiple uses. Those who want the latest fashion want something that is functional, yet sports a label from a well known designer.

Designer brands with the most desirable products include Ferragamo, priced at $900, Gucci, at around $600, Prada, Burberry and many others, which all typically cost well over $400. The Ferragamo product is available in a geometric texture of black leather, with nickel silver buckles and snaps. The Gucci purse comes in a shiny leather finish, sporting the logo name.

Obviously, designer handbags are made of quality materials. The leather comes from the best hide and the construction of the products focuses on the many small details that make the items so sought after. However, carrying the designer pouch to a job is not very practical. You may become more concerned with the item becoming damaged than on completing your work.
